A team of teachers from across Ireland led by researchers at Dublin City University’s CASTeL undertook a project that details the linkages between the Khan Academy (KA) Exercise Platform and the Irish primary and post-primary mathematics curricula.
Just take me to the Mapping Documents
The goal was to create a resource for teachers, students and parents that shows how Khan Academy can directly support the teaching and learning of specific areas of mathematics stipulated by Ireland’s the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA). The mapping directs users to banks of KA exercises that relate to specific items of the mathematics syllabus, and shows how Khan Academy may be used as a ‘virtual workbook’ for students in Irish post-primary schools.
How the Mapping is Organised
The mapping is split into 4 sections: Primary 3rd & 4th, Primary 5th & 6th, Junior Cycle, and Senior Cycle. Within each section, it is further broken down by curriculum strand, and then by chapter/section.
The tabs along the bottom of the workbook show the chapters/sections within the curriculum strand, and each of these sheets includes the Khan Academy exercises that are aligned to each given section’s content. A mapping excel workbook for a given strand are available for download.
Using the Mapping Document in Your Classroom
Once you have downloaded the mapping document and found the relevant chapter/section and topic that you are teaching, you can create a Khan Academy playlist for your class. You can recommend the exercises through the coach recommendation feature, or have the students locate and complete the exercises in their dashboard and monitor their progress in the coach reports.
This is the first iteration of the Khan Academy mapping project. The tools will be continually improved and updated as we gain feedback from teachers and students. We welcome any feedback, please fill out this form.
